We have been making small steps into homesteading. Although, I'm not really sure what all that word encompasses, or when you know you've finally achieved it, but still, check this out…
Two freezers filled to the brim with meat we raised and processed ourselves! I think that's a pretty big deal, and isn't it lovely!
Congratulations! So exciting! Is that beef on the left?
ReplyDeleteyep, grass fed! It's our first time to taste any full grass fed beef, and it was soooo good!
DeleteThat's great! I can't wait to try our lamb when it's ready (October probably). They have been getting some grain and we will probably finish them on grain for the last few weeks, but still a lot better than what you get in the store :)
DeleteDid you guys use a plucker for the chickens or did you do all of those by hand? We decided we may do 50 next year, so will need a plucker!
What a beautiful way to raise a family!
We do, a nearby farm was getting out of the biz, so we were able to buy there plucker and scalder. I have so many questions about your lambs, we have been wanting to get some!
DeleteWe will likely bring someone in for the lambs for the first year since we are brand new to all of this. The chickens were "easy" to process, but lambs require a bit more equipment :) Much like the cows I'm sure! We want to be able to have a cold room to hang them and age them for a day or two, which we don't have at home but someone could take them away for that. We definitely want them killed on our property so that they don't get scared from being taken away. The lambs have been super easy, but they are hooked on grain. They are sweet though and like to have their heads scratched. They were also the most adorable little creatures when we got them. You should definitely get some!
DeleteThat is so cool!!!! Are you planning to sell some of it? Great job guys!!!
ReplyDeleteyes, chickens for sale now, but prob won't have beef for sale til next summer!
