capturing the mundane

Lately, I've been in something of a photography rut. Just ever so slightly bored of the same settings and subjects (beautiful as they may be.) I find myself only wanting to tote out the camera when I have the perfect trifecta of interesting light, sane ensembles, and a smidgen of kitsch for good measure. Determined to beat these blues and get out of my comfort zone whilst getting in some extra practice, I strapped on the ole picture box with a plan to shoot all day.

Here's what I ended with:

It was a good exercise. Showing me areas I definitely need to improve, and opening my eyes to capturing the little moments with less care to circumstance and presentation. Photography at it's core, is freezing time. It's a moment, that's captured forever. This was us, on an everyday, a typical day- and these simple days are great days, worthy of capturing as is.

Also, I wrote a post for Daydreams of Summertime, with some photography tips, getting started and some resources to help you find your way- you can find it here.

p.s. a few of you were asking about my braid, it's a super easy fishtail I learned for my daughter, but ended up loving for my own, you can find the tutorial here.

  1. Your hair is so pretty! And I love the simple, candid moments of life you catch on your camera! Those types of photos are far more interesting to me than any type of formal shoot. You're very talented.

    1. Lol- thank you- that sweet little bug is actually my son- although he has long hair and is quite striking, so gets mistaken often:)

  4. I love these! I love mancala too. :) I think my favorites are the hands holding an apple, your daughter drawing, and your baby in the crib. :) So cute. It's always fun to try new subjects for photography. I never had any interest in it specifically before college... but now I can say that I love it! Thanks for your sweet comment on my giveaway! I am glad that you enjoyed reading about the album and the cause. If you are interested, please enter to win the copy of the album. :) Just use your email address & name in the grey widget at the bottom of the post! XO -Alexandra

  5. I think your exercise produced great results. I was trying to decide on my favorite, but they all tell a sweet story. So far, I really like your youngest walking in the woods. Those little legs, exploring and determined.

  6. I can't imagine you needing to improve in any area, your photography has gradually become a source of inspiration for me - funnily enough, particularly what you consider to be the 'mundane'. It's incredible how artistic you can make something that appears in everyday life appear! :)

  10. wonderful shots! photography is still very new to me and i have such a hard time knowing what is good or not when i take a photo. you know what i mean? sometimes i will get a shot, especially indoors, and im like wow that is so good, but i cannot get that same shot again to save my soul. for me, as a beginner and someone who knows very little about digital ... it's a crap chute. you always seem to capture everything so well .. may i ask ... what program do you use to edit your photos? adobe?

  13. Your photographs are gorgeous! I love seemingly simple subjects, its makes the photos that much more a work of art...that is to transform the obvious to something surprising.

Love the braid and your babies are cute as ever!

  14. As always, you've totally rocked this! Some gorgeous moments were captured there. You really are talented!

As many above, I too am in love with your braid! Fishtail braids look so great on blondes - of course brunettes too but it really pops with blonde hair! Must be so fun to have kiddies to practise braiding on. Can't wait for my turn some day!
